Labour have finally set out their definitive position on Brexit - sort of.

That polarised choice is indeed what obstructive MPs on the no-deal and remainer extremes are contriving - in many cases defying their election commitments - but the majority vote for leaving the EU accompanied by a large minority voting to remain suggests that the centre of gravity in the country is close to the deal which is actually on the table, negotiated by Theresa May with the EU, though preferably with permanent membership of the customs union as Labour desires.

The Labour leader has come under increasing pressure from his deputy to announce Labour as "the party of Remain", with Mr Watson this week imploring members to proclaim their support for staying in the EU.

"As democrats, Labour accepted the result of the 2016 referendum", Corbyn wrote in an email to party members. More than half of British companies with foreign staff fear they would be hurt by the government's plans for a post-Brexit immigration system, according to a survey published on Tuesday.

Labour lawmaker Hilary Benn, who heads Parliament's Brexit Committee, said "this is a very significant moment".

This would leave it unclear what would be detailed in a potential snap election Labour manifesto. "We got 14% of the vote", he said.

Phil Wilson, a Labour former whip who backs the People's Vote campaign, said it was a "positive step forward" but urged Labour to unite with second referendum proponents across the political spectrum.

"There's no indication whatsoever that voters in my area. have changed their mind", he said.

If the party gained power, after a General Election Labour would still try to negotiate a new deal with the EU. "I haven't been clear and I'm not clear now".

Both Mr Johnson and Mr Hunt have said that, if they won the race for No 10, they would seek to renegotiate the terms of Britain's withdrawal but would leave without a deal if they failed to do so.

Most businesses and economists think a no-deal Brexit would plunge Britain into recession as customs checks take effect at United Kingdom ports and tariffs are imposed on trade between the United Kingdom and the EU.

The latest union-agreed stance on how Labour should in future campaign on the issue of Brexit is yet another "ifs and buts" policy (Labour should back remain in referendum on Tory Brexit - unions, 9 July).

Mr. Hunt's supporters have expressed frustration at the reluctance of Mr. Johnson to take part in direct debate, and hope that this debate offers a chance to turn the contest around.

The victor of the contest will be decided by a poll of the party's estimated 160,000 voting members and is due to take office later this month.
