According to The Toronto Star, Niagara Parks Police responded to call of a person in crisis near the edge of the Canadian side of the Horseshoe Falls around 4:00 AM on Tuesday.

Police learned that the man climbed over the retaining wall and was swept over Horseshoe Falls.

The Buffalo News reported that the man was sitting on some rocks below the Journey Behind the Falls observation platform when police found him.

He plunged over the waterfall, a 167-foot drop, but walked away with non-life threatening injuries, the police department said.

He was later found sitting on the rocks below.

Andy Essor, an Ontario resident, told the outlet that the man is "a very lucky guy".

Niagara Falls is notoriously deadly, and has proven fatal to many who have tried to survive a plunge over the falls.

According to Buffalo News, an estimated 25 people kill themselves by going over the falls each year.

Tuesday's events unfolded on the 59th anniversary of another miraculous story of survival at Niagara Falls.

On July 9, 1960, 7-year-old Roger Woodward was rescued after going over Horseshoe Falls in only a life jacket following a boating accident on the upper portion of the river. Horseshoe Falls is the largest, followed by American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Niagara Falls is responsible for draining Lake Erie and Lake Ontario; The Washington Post reports that many areas in the Great Lakes region have experienced 150 to 200% of their yearly precipitation rates this year, causing flooding.

"I know firsthand the lake levels are at all-time high levels", Diodati said.

"In this case, for this individual, hopefully he will see it as a blessing", he said.
