In the opening round of the 2019 John Deere Classic, Roberto Diaz came in late to take the solo lead over Adam Long and Russell Henley who also impressed the crowd with clutch shots on Thursday. Martin Laird was another stroke back at 65 with Ryan Palmer, Andrew Landry, Vaughn Taylor, Zack Sucher and Ryan Blaum.

Henley, a back-nine starter, made eight birdies, most after putting his approach inside four feet and the last a 48-footer at the par-3 seventh. But he highlighted an impressive birdie run by drilling a 55-foot putt on the par-3 7th hole.

"I don't think I've ever lost the belief that I can have a nice tournament or a nice round".

"I just haven't felt myself playing golf". "It's just a matter of a few bumps here and there".

Diaz birdied four of the first five holes, sank his third shot for an eagle on No. 10 and added three more birdies down the stretch in a flawless round.

All eyes will be on 3M Open victor Matthew Wolff when the John Deere Classic gets underway at TPC Deere Run.

Norris has been instrumental in taking McLaren into fourth in the constructors' championship and has shown huge promise. I feel like there have been other incidents in the past, which have been less big in a way, and have been penalised.

Twenty-year-old rookie Matthew Wolff, who picked up his first career win at the 3M Open last week, opened with a 67.

Wolff, the youngest victor on the tour since Jordan Spieth won at Deere Run six years ago, hit 15 greens in regulation and played bogey-free.

"Having that PGA Tour card locked up is a lot of weight off of my shoulders", Wolff said. "Everything in my game feels really good right now".

Zach Johnson - the 2012 victor had a disappointing day as he sits one over following a 72.

Diaz, in his second year on tour, posted a career-best tie for eighth at the Travelers Championship three weeks ago, and the 32-year-old stepped up his game even further on Thursday.

"It's still golf, it still drives you insane, and I still have a bit of a perfectionist in me that I don't like to settle for mediocre", he said.
