  • Pak Judge Who Jailed Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif Sacked Over Blackmail Claims

Accountability court judge Arshad Malik, who is now embroiled in the so-called judge video scandal, penned a letter Friday to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) wherein he refuted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz's claims and revealed other information related to the controversy. The Supreme Court should also consider initiating contempt proceedings against those found guilty of contempt, he added.

Maryam Nawaz also unveiled a video clip whereby accountability judge Arshad Malik could be heard saying that there was "no proof of corruption against the deposed premier" in the December 24 Al-Azizia reference.

Judge Malik submitted on Friday a letter and statement in the Islamabad High Court in his defence in the video case.

The judge was "blackmailed" into handing down the sentence against Nawaz Sharif after some people threatened that they would release a private video of his, she alleged.

However, Minister for Law Dr Farogh Nasim told reporters that his ministry would not initiate any proceedings against the accountability judge in connection with the leaked videos. "Under Article 203 of the Constitution, it is the high court which superintends the subordinate courts", the minister explained, adding that special courts, including the accountability court, fell within the territorial jurisdiction of the IHC and, therefore, it was IHC chief justice who could any take action in this regard.

Later, the accountability court judge called the video presented by the PML-N as fake and fallacious.

In response, Judge Malik issued a press statement denying the allegations of being blackmailed. Protecting freedom of expression is one of our core values.

He revealed that PML-N leaders offered him bribe when he was hearing National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references against Sharif family.

He further said the Flagship and HME references were transferred for trial to his court and associates and supporters of Mian Nawaz Sharif approached him on a number of occasions "with demands, inducements and threats to acquit Mian Nawaz Sharif and the other accused".

"The verdict against Nawaz Sharif should be declared void as it has now confirmed that the video was not fake and that the judge was coerced into indicting the former prime minister", Aurangzeb said.

Malik's removal on Friday prompted immediate calls by Sharif's PML-N party for the release of the 69-year-old former prime minister, who is now serving a seven-year jail sentence in the Kot Lakhpat jail in the eastern city of Lahore.
