When the group of sugary drinks was split into fruit juices and other sugary drinks, the consumption of both beverage types was associated with a higher risk of overall cancer.
"This study reports a possible association between higher consumption of sugary drinks and an increased risk of cancer, but does not provide evidence of cause, as the authors readily admit", he said. Researchers say beverages with more than 5% sugar are sugary drinks.
Artificially sweetened beverages weren't found to have the same cancer risk association, but there may not have been enough data to make an adequate assessment of that risk.
The team defined sugary drinks as beverages containing more than 5% of simple carbohydrates, which include soft drinks, syrups, milkshakes and energy drinks, among others, as well as 100% fruit juice.
"However, this study assumes a real causal relationship between the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and cancer, which requires further research", said Graham Wheeler, senior statistician at Cancer Research UK, a UK cancer research institute. These included 97 types of sugary drinks.
Touvier said her team observed that sugar seemed to be the main driver of the link.
"So this means if 1,000 similar participants increased their daily sugary drink intake by 100ml, we'd expect the number of cancer cases to rise from 22 to 26 per 1,000 people over a five-year period".
"That said, America's leading beverage companies are working together to support consumer' efforts to reduce the sugar they consume from our beverages by providing more choices with less sugar or zero sugar, smaller package sizes and clear calorie information right up front". Eloi Chazelas, from the Sorbonne Paris Cité Epidemiology and Statistics Research Center in France, is the first author of the study.

Drinking approximately 3.4 ounces of soda per day increases the risk for cancer, a new study discovered. This has been convincingly linked to obesity, which is recognised as a strong risk factor for many cancers.
"All current sweeteners in use have been through rigorous safety testing before being acceptable for human use", said Collins, who was not involved in the study.
Method: The research team collected data from 100,000 French men and women, who had an average age of 42. Participants were followed up with for up nine years.
Daily consumption of sugary drinks - sugar-sweetened beverages and 100% fruit juices - and artificially sweetened or diet beverages were calculated and first cases of cancer reported by participants were validated by medical records and linked with health insurance national databases.
So, it did show that the people who drank the most (about 185ml a day) had more cancer cases than those who drank the least (less than 30ml a day). Chazelas and colleagues accounted for potential confounders, including age, sex, education, hereditary risk of cancer, and lifestyle factors - such as smoking behaviour and exercise patterns.
The French researchers say the link "was strongly driven by sugar content" and they blame blood sugar levels.
Excessive intake of sugars also increases weight gain.
