Barry moved agonizingly slowly across Louisiana, expected to arrive Monday in Arkansas, producing thunderstorms and torrents of rain that may cause widespread flooding.

Even though Tropical Depression Barry did not unleash catastrophic flooding in Louisiana, many across the Gulf Coast were urged to take heed of tornado and flash-flood warnings Monday as the storm moved north. The National Hurricane Center warned of unsafe flash flooding.

In Mississippi, forecasters said 8 inches (20 centimetres) of rain had fallen in parts of Jasper and Jones counties, with several more inches possible.

New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell said the city was "beyond lucky" that rainfall there fell well short of predictions of a deluge that could overwhelm the city's pumping systems. Even though the region, one of the wettest in the United States, is constantly prone to seasonal flooding from the Mississippi River, heavy rainfall and hurricanes, few resources have been made available to mitigate these dangers.

Where is Barry now? .

As of yesterday morning, about 50,000 homes and businesses in Louisiana were without electricity, according to the tracking site PowerOutage.us. Contributing to this report were Associated Press writers Rebecca Santana in New Orleans; Jay Reeves in Mandeville; Rogelio Solis in Morgan City; Emily Wagster Pettus in Jackson, Mississippi; Jeff Martin in Atlanta; and Jeffrey Collins in Columbia, South Carolina.

The level of the Mississippi River, already swollen from historic rains and flooding upstream, was at almost 5.2 meters in the state's biggest city New Orleans - just below flood stage. Cruise ship arrivals and departures were expected to stay on schedule.

And the problems persisted long after Saturday's landfall - when Barry came ashore as a weak hurricane. The storm entered the coast with sustained winds of up to 75 miles per hour.

However, in a news conference on Sunday evening, Louisiana's governor John Bel Edwards said he was "extremely grateful" that Barry did not cause the disastrous floods that had earlier been forecast.
