  • House Votes to Bar Trump's Planned Weapons Sales to Saudi Arabia, UAE

The US House of Representatives has voted to block the sale of certain arms to Saudi Arabia.

The three resolutions which were approved by the US House were already passed by the Senate.

Trump is seeking 22 separate sales of aircraft support maintenance, precision-guided munitions and other weapons and equipment to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan at a moment of heightened tensions in the Middle East. A bipartisan majority in both the House and Senate - but not a veto-proof majority - objected to the move, which would replenish part of the Saudi arsenal that lawmakers say has been used against civilians in Yemen's long-running civil war.

Democrats in particular have expressed deep concern over the Trump administration's pro-Saudi policies, even as the kingdom has engaged in series of high-profile human rights violations - including the slaying of USA -based journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

" "Reckless" doesn't begin to describe it", the New York Democrat said.

The measures are attempts to push back against the Trump administration's decision to bypass Congress by approving a number of arms deals with Saudi Arabia.

American arms control law enables Congress to dismiss weapon sales of global nations but an exemption in arms law enables the president to waive the arms assistance for U.S. congressional approval by declaring a state of a national security emergency. He called the resolutions "extraordinary but necessary" to stop "a phony emergency to override the authority of Congress". The Saudis have recently faced a number of attacks from Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

"Iran and the forces it supports ... are a threat to our national security and the security of our allies", he said.

His Republican colleague, however, countered that prohibiting the licenses would stop the US from "providing our partners with the arms they need to defend themselves".

Senator Bob Menendez, a top Democrat leader on foreign affairs, and Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican and political ally of Trump, led the challenge to the Saudi arms sales.
