Slain Russian gay-rights activist had received threats - campaigner

Russian campaigners said on Monday that a woman found murdered with multiple stab wounds in the city of Saint Petersburg was a well-known activist who had received threats over her protests for LGBT rights and opposition causes.

On Grigoryeva's Facebook page, supporters are posting messages that mourn her death and celebrate her life.

Closing August, dozens of LGBT rights activists were arrested during a banned philosophize in St Petersburg to advertise the rights of sexual minorities. She was known for taking part in multiple protests for LGBT rights, and pacifist demonstrations.

The woman was stabbed and allegedly stranged; the body found in the bushes was identified by oppositionists Alexander Khmelyov and Alexander Mironov. A suspect has been detained in connection with her murder, according to Fontanka. He said she had recently reported threats of violence to the police, but they took no action.

In a post on Facebook on Monday, activist Dinar Idrisov said his friend Ms Grigoryeva had been "brutally killed near her home".

In 2017, several people died after Russia's Chechnya republic began rounding up gay men en masse and torturing them in secret facilities.
