Actress and daughter of world champion boxer Barry McGuigan dies aged 33

The actress daughter of Barry McGuigan has died after a "brief but courageous battle" against cancer.

"My handsome sister Danika lost her battle with cancer in the early hours of Tuesday morning, at the young age of 33".

McGuigan, who was known as Nika to her friends and family, was the daughter of former boxing champion Barry McGuigan.

Posting on Istagram, Nika's brother Shane said his sister had passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning after losing her battle with cancer.

"As a family we are devastated and ask for complete privacy during this hard period to allow us to grieve for our Nika", they added.

I'm definitely not the only one who thought Danika McGuigan was an exceptional talent - I loved her in Can't Cope, Won't Cope, and I'm stunned and saddened to hear of her passing, at just 33.

Nika had a long history with acute lymphoid leukaemia after being diagnosed with the cancerous blood disease aged 11 but fought it off in a two year battle. Myself, my brothers and parents were privileged to have another 20 years since the first battle with our unbelievable Nika. She also starred in "The Secret Scripture" which was an adaptation of the novel by Sebastian Barry.

"Unfortunately, Nika couldn't beat it again, but she fought so bravely until the end".

Many tributes have been paid to the Dublin-based actress on social media.
