Andy Murray hopes to step up his competitive return from hip surgery after confirming on Wednesday that he will play next week's Citi Open doubles event with his brother Jamie.

Murray, whose emotional withdrawal from the Citi Open past year after winning a third-round singles match that ended at 3 a.m., recently contacted Ein to express his interest in coming back to Washington to play doubles alongside his brother, Jamie, for the first time since 2016.

They have also won two ATP Tour titles together, in Tokyo in 2011 and Valencia in 2010. He won his first tournament back at Queen's in June, but suffered early knock-outs at both Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

The former No. 1 has taken a wildcard in the doubles event joining brother Jamie on the court.

Jamie Murray, 33, won the Washington doubles title past year with former partner Bruno Soares, a pairing that also won Australian and US Open titles. Soares is also back this year, and will compete with partner Mate Pavic of Croatia.

"They called us and said Andy really wanted to come back to DC, and wanted to play doubles with his brother", tournament director Mark Ein told the New York Times. He said: "Obviously, very excited to be on the court with him". It is a city I have always enjoyed visiting.

"It should be fun and I am hoping to have a good summer over in the states, keep progressing physically and hopefully get on the singles court soon". On top of the Murray combo, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios will be teaming up, and the field also includes top seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah and the Bryan brothers.

The three-time Grand Slam champion revealed he had spoken with Jamie about the prospect of teaming up at Wimbledon.
