This is first e-cigarette prevention TV ads for kids that come under the agency's $60 million "The Real Cost" Youth E-Cigarette Prevention Campaign. Federal data showed e-cigarette use among high school students rose by 77 percent that year.
E-cigarettes were initially introduced as a substitute for tobacco cigarettes.
The move comes as Chinese e-cigarette startups raised loads of venture capital a year ago in their fight to strive for attention in the world's largest market of smokers.
Previous research has already linked e-cigarettes to a range of health problems including an increased risk of heart attack, an increased risk of pneumonia, damage to lung cells and damage to the immune system's white blood cells, suggesting that using them comes with its own set of health risks. Because the liquid contains nicotine, the product is supposed to give a smoker the pleasures of smoking without using tobacco. But people in that small group of daily vapers, the researchers found, were more likely than either periodic e-cigarette users or non-vapers to report abstaining from traditional cigarettes by the end of the study. Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who resigned in April, was a particularly harsh critic of e-cigarette marketers.

The new TV ads called "Magic", feature street magician Julius Dein, who has appeared in online videos with a number of celebrities.
"We will continue to work to keep e-cigarettes out of the hands of America's kids through policies to limit youth access to, and appeal of, e-cigarette products, take vigorous compliance and enforcement actions to hold manufacturers and retailers accountable when they illegally market or sell these products to minors, and continue to spearhead highly successful public education efforts to warn youth about the dangers of all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes". The illusion is supposed to drive home the idea that teens who vape are more likely to start smoking cigarettes. A statement said ads will run on ESPN, TeenNick, CW and MTV, along with music sites and social media.
