All three iterations of Woodstock were held in Upstate New York: the original, in Bethel; the 25th anniversary, in 1994, in Saugerties; and the 30th anniversary concert, in 1999, in Rome.

"We're a place that supports and celebrates arts and culture", he said during the conference.

Other towns in upstate New York denied permit applications for the event, until Thursday when The New York Times and Bloomberg reported that the fest, also slated for August 16 to 18, would be held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. Merriweather is the third site organizers have looked into, following the Watkins Glen International raceway and the Vernon Downs track and casino, both in NY.

In a latter, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball wrote to Greg Peck, one of the Woodstock organizers: "When we heard that there was an opportunity to save this festival and bring a piece of American history to our community this summer, we jumped at the chance".

John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival and United States rap star Jay-Z both pulled out of the 50th anniversary Woodstock festival on Friday, just weeks before the troubled event is supposed to take place.

The three-day festival was originally scheduled to take place August 16-18.

Jay-Z will no longer be performing at the upcoming Woodstock 50 festival, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told CNN. The news also comes just a day after both Jay-Z and John Fogerty pulled out of taking part in what has become the best joke of the 2019 concert season thus far.

Bill Werde, the former editorial director of Billboard, said because of the location change artists can likely back out of performing. The new location was designed for such events and could more efficiently adapt to organizers' needs. Yesterday, it was announced that Woodstock 50 would actually be happening in Maryland instead of NY (uhhhh ok) and now, it's being revealed that a huge player has pulled out of the fest entirely. "It's like watching a boxer who just won't stay down when he really should".
