The Booker Prize is open to fiction writers of any nationality, writing in English and published in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

British novelist Salman Rushdie, who won in 1981 for Midnight's Children, makes the 13-book longlist for his latest novel, Quichotte.

The longlist features one debut novel, My Sister, The Serial Killer, a "funny, tragic and wildly entertaining book" by 31-year-old Oyinkan Braithwaite, about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a habit of killing her boyfriends. The postmodern novel about a housewife in OH is written as one sentence, and is 1,040 pages long. Until 2014, it was awarded to only novels written by writers from the Commonwealth, Irish, South African and Zimbabwe. There are no favourites; they are all credible winners. These writers offer joy and hope. The victor of the award, which comes with a $62,000 cash prize, will be revealed at a ceremony October 14.

The shortlist will be announced on September 3, and the victor will be declared on October 14. They celebrate the rich complexity of English as a global language. "Really - read all of them".
