The news of the rare redeployment is the latest incident involving other misconduct among the US military's elite special operations forces, particularly among Navy SEALs.

Initially, the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) stated that the platoon, stationed in Iraq as part of the US mission to combat Daesh, had been ordered to return home due to "perceived deterioration of good order and discipline".

The New York Times reported Thursday, citing a senior Navy official, that the Navy is investigating reports that the alcohol consumption occurred during a Fourth of July party and that a senior enlisted platoon member had raped a female service member working with the platoon.

Another high-profile scandal still impacting both the Navy and Marine Corps special operation communities involves the murder of U.S. Army Green Beret Staff Sergeant Logan Melgar, in the west African country of Mali back in June 2017.

A commander overseeing USA special operations troops battling the Islamic State in Iraq has ordered a SEAL platoon to return to San Diego early after a "perceived deterioration of good order and discipline", the military said late Wednesday. Officials at U.S. Special Operations Command said, "Commanders have worked to mitigate the operational impact as this SEAL platoon follows a deliberate redeployment".

A platoon of U.S. Navy SEALs was sent home from Iraq following allegations of sexual misconduct and drinking while deployed, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports. "The loss of confidence in this case outweighed potential operational risk". A second Pentagon official Newsweek spoke to on condition of anonymity said the platoon had invoked their right to remain silent.

Navy Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher walks into military court in San Diego, California, on June 21, 2019.

Another SEAL, Chief Special Warfare Operator Edward Gallagher, recently faced court-martial on war-crimes charges that included murder.

Earlier this week, the Navy Times reported that members of SEAL Team 10 had tested positive for cocaine. He was released after the judge sentenced him to time served.

In May, Chief Petty Officer Adam Matthews, a member of the elite SEAL Team Six, was sentenced to a year in prison after he pled guilty to his role in the strangulation death of Melgar.

Defense attorney Tim Parlatore said the trial was a "mutiny" and that he was being set up for the murder of the young ISIS fighter in 2017 by a group of younger SEALs who did not like his tough, old-school leadership style. Cmdr. Tamara Lawrence, a spokeswoman for Navy Special Warfare (NSW), said discipline is critical not only to SEALs' success on the battlefield, but to preserve the trust and confidence of the American people.

"Leaders at all levels must lead in a way that sustains and sharpens that foundation", she said.
