A South Korean general was sacked over the lapse in border security.

A North Korean fishing boat was found drifting in South Korean waters off the east coast, Saturday - the latest in a series of vessels from the North that have illegally crossed the maritime border this year.

The new North Korean projectiles had irregular trajectories and flew at lower altitudes than conventional ballistic missiles which makes it hard to intercept them, the Japanese Defense Ministry said, as quoted by the NHK broadcaster.

The JCS said a Navy vessel was immediately sent to the scene and brought the crew members and the boat to a military port in Yangyang, Gangwon Province.

"The crew said they "lost direction" and cited a 'navigation mistake", the Yonhap news agency wrote citing a Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official, who added that the crew claimed to have crossed the NLL due to a "navigation error".

The JCS said there was an abundance of fishing gear on the boat, with squid in the storage cabin.

Although they could not have reached anywhere near the United States, the missiles' range would easily include ally South Korea and large USA military bases near the border.

North Korea has released a Russian fishing boat and its crew held after being accused of violating entry regulations, the Russian embassy in Pyongyang has said, in an incident that prompted a Russian warning of a freeze of talks on fisheries cooperation.

The boat was the only vessel spotted around the NLL area at the time. Independent journalists were not given access to cover the event depicted in this image distributed by the North Korean government.

It said the boat was owned by the North Korean military and one of the three was a wearing military uniform. The 10-meter wooden boat was also towed.
