"I assumed I dropped them off at daycare before I went to work", Rodriguez told officers, according to court documents cited by ABC. My babies are dead.

The distraught father told police he thought he had dropped them off at day care.

Rodriquez works as a social worker at the James J. Peters VA Hospital in Kingsbridge.

In a statement to NBC, she said: "I will never get over this loss and I know he will never forgive himself for this mistake". Everything I do reminds me of my sweet, intelligent, handsome babies and I am still in disbelief.

Rodriguez, free on $100,000 bail, faces manslaughter and other charges.

He is accused of leaving the two children in the backseat of his Honda Accord for eight hours - with their bodies reaching 42C. Temperatures in the city on Friday were over 85 degrees.

Around 50 family members showed up at court to support him as he was hailed before a judge on Saturday.

Their mother, Marissa Rodriguez, of Congers, New York, said she was grieving, and in disbelief but stood by her husband, who told a court that he had "blanked out", and forgotten they were in the auto.

New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera called for stepping up efforts to prevent such deaths, including educational campaigns and technology to remind parents that kids are still in a vehicle.
