17 dead in auto explosion in central Cairo - health ministry

The auto crash, which happened just before midnight on Sunday on the capital's Nile corniche road, outside the National Cancer Institute, also wounded 30 people, the ministry added.

A preliminary statement released by the Ministry of Interior says that the explosion occurred shortly before midnight and was caused by a vehicle driving outside the Institute in the opposite direction before colliding with up to three other vehicles.

At least 19 people have been killed when a speeding auto driving against traffic crashed into three others causing a huge explosion in Cairo, the Egyptian health ministry has said.

The Ministry of Health also announced that it had evacuated patients from the Institute following the explosion.

"There are around four seriously injured cases that were registered into the intensive care unit, while other injuries varied between mild to moderate bone break".

According to the country's official statistics agency, in 2018, there were 8,000 auto crashes in the country - crashes that left more than 3,000 people dead and 12,000 injured.

Egypt's public prosecutor is investigating the cause of the incident, sources told Reuters, but there was no official statement indicating that the explosion was an attack.
