  • United States must condemn white supremacy

Upstaged by his daughter and many moderate Republicans, Trump later took to the White House pulpit to condemn "racism, bigotry and white supremacy", With vice-president Mike Pence by his side, he said, "These sinister ideologies must be defeated".

US President Donald Trump on Monday proposed tighter monitoring of the internet, mental health reform and wider use of the death penalty in response to mass slayings over the weekend that killed 30 people in Texas and Ohio.

Trump, whose rhetoric has frequently been condemned as stoking racial divisions, laid out a number of policy options but did not mention his own past remarks. "Hate has no place in America. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart, and devours the soul".

The gunman in El Paso is believed to be a white nationalist who authorities think may have posted a racist and anti-immigrant manifesto on the online message board 8chan shortly before opening fire on shoppers in a local Walmart.

Trump suggested several policy responses to the shootings, including cracking down on violent video games, supporting "red flag laws" which allow authorities to confiscate guns from people deemed risky and directing the Justice Department to propose legislation to ensure that people convicted of hate crimes or mass shootings will face the death penalty.

The president said he's enlisting the help of social media companies to aid in early detection.

It's hard to tell exactly how the gaffe occurred, given that Trump appears to be diligently staying on script and not straying from the remarks presented to him on the teleprompter.

"We are a loving nation, and our children are entitled to grow up in a just, peaceful and loving society", he said. Though he initially cited Dayton as the location of the second shooting on Sunday, near the end of his remarks the president slipped up and stated the wrong city.

He did not express support for gun control measures proposed in Congress. "Why not?" Trump said.

Democrats, who have long pushed for greater gun control, said Trump was indirectly to blame for the attack in Texas, with some drawing connections between his rhetoric to a resurgence in nationalism and xenophobic sentiment. "We can never forget them, and those many who came before them", Trump said on Twitter.

It was not immediately clear what specific steps Trump wants or what other action he plans to take with Congress on summer recess and USA lawmakers not scheduled to return to Washington until September. Greg Abbott of Texas and Mike DeWine of OH, as well as Mayors Dee Margo of El Paso and Nan Whaley of Dayton.

Following the shooting in OH on Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer took to Twitter to urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to call the Senate back from summer recess for an emergency session to "put the House-passed universal background checks legislation on the Senate floor for debate and a vote immediately".

"Instead of flailing around blaming everything under the sun, if the president is serious about "strong background checks" there's one thing he can do: Demand Sen".

Trump made a similar call to strengthen background checks after the February 2018 mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

He then blamed the press, tweeting, "The Media has a big responsibility to life and safety in our Country".
