  • Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is visiting North America to 'fire up' trade talks

The Trump administration will pursue a free-trade agreement with Britain as soon as possible after it leaves the European Union, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday as the country's new foreign secretary made his first official visit to the United States. "So that includes a free trade deal in both the interests of the United Kingdom but also the U.S".

"And we talked about all the things that we want to do together in the post-Brexit vision for the UK".

Truss said "negotiating and signing an exciting new free trade agreement with the US" was one of her priorities.

However, the president has already expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister after relations with Theresa May soured during her final days in office.

"We hope they will put in place criterion for vendors that uphold our shared values".

"We don't regard Brexit as a precipice [to a trade war]".

Top US exports are financial services and aircraft while British exports include autos and tourism.

Mr Raab is also due to sit down with US National security Adviser John Bolton in Washington, the Foreign Office said.

"We appreciate the president's warmth and enthusiasm for the UK-US relationship", Raab said in a statement after their White House meeting.

'The UK looks forward to working with our American friends to reach a free trade deal that is good for both countries, and cooperating on the common security challenges we face'.

Trade Secretary Liz Truss is in Washington to meet figures including secretary of commerce Wilbur Ross.

"For the UK, Brexit is not just about risk management - although that's important, and I wouldn't want to be glib or not take that very seriously - but it's also, and I think our Prime Minister has been very clear about that, about grasping the enormous opportunities of our new found freedoms".
