The area in Russia's northern Arkhangelsk region is home to a weapons testing range for the navy.

Russia's Defence Ministry says two people were killed and six others were wounded when a rocket engine exploded during a test. The population of Severodvinsk was 185,000 at the beginning of 2017, according to officials.

"Sensors in Severodvinsk recorded a short-term increase in radiation levels".

Citing data from the Emergencies Ministry, Greenpeace said radiation levels had risen 20 times above the normal level in the city, Reuters news agency reported.

RIA news agency quoted the defence ministry as saying no risky substances had been released into the atmosphere by the explosion of what it called a liquid-propellant rocket engine in the Arkhangelsk region.
