  • City airports go into shutdown as Typhoon Lekima hits Shanghai

More than a million people were evacuated from their homes ahead of the storm, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

At least 13 people were killed and 16 others missing in a landslide after Typhoon Lekima lashed eastern China, national television reported Saturday.

The typhoon made landfall early on Saturday, first hitting Wenling city in Zheijiang before making its way north towards the densely populated city of Shanghai.

The storm, which prompted China's weather bureau to issue a red alert - its highest warning, was pounding the city of Wenling in Zhejiang province, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported.

'Torrential rains caused a landslide on a mountain that blocked a river below, ' it said.

On Saturday, the alert was downgraded to orange, the country's second highest.

The storm was located in Xianju county of eastern China's Zhejiang province at around 7am, the centre said, with top winds of about 119 kilometres per hour.

More than 700,000 people were relocated, among whom over 110,000 were settled in 12,000 shelters.

Power cut hits London and southeast of England, halting trains
The power cut meant traffic lights were out of action across the UK. "It was like witnessing something out of an apocalyptic film".

More than 200 houses collapsed and 3,200 were damaged.

Power blackouts affected about 2.72 million households in Zhejiang as strong wind and rain downed electricity transmission lines, state media reported.

Authorities have cancelled more than a thousand flights and train services for safety.

Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines were among those announcing cancellations, mainly for flights between Shanghai and Taiwan on Friday, as Typhoon Lekima approached.

Almost 200 trains through the city of Jinan in Shandong province were also suspended until Monday, Xinhua reported.

The storm was moving northward at 15 kph and was gradually weakening, Xinhua reported, citing the weather bureau.

The typhoon is predicted to hit Jiangsu province early on Sunday morning before veering over the Yellow Sea and continuing north, where it will then make landfall again at Shandong province, CCTV said.

Coastal businesses in Zhejiang were shut and the Ministry of Emergency Management warned of potential risk of fire, explosions and toxic gas leaks at chemical parks and oil refineries.
