Yesterday, Matthew Harris, a passenger on one of the airline's flights from Luton to Geneva, shared a picture of a woman sitting in a seat which was missing a back.

Scroll through the replies to the original tweet and you'll spot a flurry of replies from EasyJet - the first of which asks Harris to remove the photograph in the tweet.

While the flight landed without any reported injuries or delays, the picture has sparked a lot of outrage on the social media channel. They responded to the user on Twitter, asking him to remove the photograph and message them directly about the incident.

Their official Twitter account responded nearly immediately, but not to check about the seat or to apologise, but to ask Matthew to remove the photo.

"No passengers were permitted to sit in these seats as they were inoperative awaiting fix".

"Not sure what would have happened if the flight was full", he added.

However, the airline says the image was misleading as the seats were out of order and nobody used them.

Another Twitter user said: "I don't understand why the captain, who ultimate authority, didn't refuse to fly with passengers in those seats".

Seats must also be approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency as part of general checks on plane safety.

It means a seat without a back would be illegal and would not be permitted on board a plane.

"One has to wonder how safe the rest of the plane was".

'If they were moved, then it's not really that shocking. "If folk were sitting in them for the whole flight, heads will surely roll?"

"No passengers were permitted to fly in these seats as they were inoperative awaiting fix".

In a response to questions by Business Insider, EasyJet said that the seats were not in use and were awaiting fix.

Alongside the snap, which has now racked up over 7,500 likes, he wrote: #easyjet beats @Ryanair to have backless seats. "Safety is our highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all safety guidelines", said the easyJet statement.
