  • El Paso crowd decries racism week after mass shooting

Authorities believe that shortly before the attack, Crusius posted a racist screed online that railed against an influx of Hispanics into the U.S. The document parrots some of President Donald Trump's divisive rhetoric about immigration, but the writer said his views predate Trump's rise and that any attempt to blame the president for his actions was "fake news". Crusius has been charged with capital murder.

"I'm the shooter", accused mass murderer Patrick Crusius told police, according to a report Friday in the Washington Post, which obtained an arrest warrant affidavit written a day after the massacre by Det. He reportedly got out of his vehicle with his hands in the air and told police, "I'm the shooter".

The suspected gunman has reportedly waived his right to an attorney and is freely sharing his confession with police.

"The defendant stated his target (was) 'Mexicans, '" the affidavit says.

El Paso lies on the border with Mexico and has a large Latino population.

White House officials and big social media companies met on Friday to talk about how to curb extremism online after the shootings but the White House declined to comment on who took part in the closed-door session.

The suspect in El Paso was able to legally purchase the assault rifle used in the attack, and carry it into the Walmart due to the state's "open carry" gun laws. The lawyer added that Crusius did not identify herself or her son to police when she made the call and that the department did not file the call or follow up on it.

There has also been increased scrutiny - and criticism - of the president's language - he has repeatedly referred to an immigrant "invasion". On Thursday, a funeral was held in Ciudad Juarez for one of the victims.

Relatives of longtime El Paso resident Angelina Silva Englisbee, 86, described her in the LA Times as "sassy" and "a very strong-willed lady". Her family say they had been waiting for her in the Walmart auto park when she was killed.
