  • Israel military: Four Palestinian militants killed on Gaza border

An Israeli soldier takes aim at Palestinian protesters while a photojournalist takes pictures next to him, both behind cover, during clashes following a weekly protest against the expropriation of Palestinian land by Israel in the village of Kfar Qaddum near the Jewish settlement of Qadumim (Kedumim), in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The Israeli army has said its troops shot dead four Palestinians near the boundary area between Gaza and Israel on Saturday morning. "Once one of the terrorists crossed into Israel, our troops opened fire".

No casualties were reported in Israeli ranks.

Conricus said that the "organization affiliation" of the four individuals remained unknown.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised intelligence and security forces for locating and arresting the suspects.

A Hamas statement condemned Israel's killing of the four Palestinians as a "crime".

At least 301 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza or the boundary area since then, the majority during demonstrations.

The protests have declined in intensity in recent months following a United Nations and Egypt-brokered truce under which Israel agreed to ease aspects of its blockade in return for calm.

London hit by power outage following national grid failure
He added: "We were literally plunged into darkness and people were using their phones as torches to see and get around". Power failures were reported as far apart as London in southeast England and Cheshire in the northwest.

Under the truce, Israel agreed to take steps to ease aspects of its blockade in return for calm on the border.

Conricus said a larger attack had been prevented, without providing more details.

Last week, three soldiers were injured after a Palestinian who was seeking to avenge his brother's death at the hands of Israeli forces entered Israel from Gaza and opened fire. He was killed and three Israeli soldiers wounded, the army said.

But he is likely to face political pressure to act firmly against any significant attack.

The attack came as Palestinians prepare to mark Eid al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice.

The Shin Bet security service said Saturday that two suspects have been arrested in the killing of IDF soldier Dvir Sorek in the West Bank, following intelligence and operational activity.

However, he blamed the Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza, for being "responsible and accountable for any acts of violence emanating from the Gaza Strip whether they were Hamas operatives or not Hamas operatives".

The killing of the 19-year-old, between Bethlehem and the flashpoint city of Hebron, further hiked Israeli-Palestinian tensions ahead of the elections.
