Matteo Salvini, the deputy prime minister, reiterated his calls for a snap vote on Friday, adding that any attempt to block his wishes and install a new ruling coalition would be unacceptable.

Both the League and the 5-Star Movement have said they don't want to see a government formed of non-political technocrats.

The crisis inside the Italian government has been sparked by a parliament vote on a major railroad project, which was supported by the Lega party, while the MS5 Movement, its coalition partner, was against it.

Salvini has already announced his candidacy to be the next prime minister, even though elections are yet to be scheduled.

Conte, who celebrated his 55th birthday August 8, appeared bitter that his government experience appeared to be coming to an end, and took some swipes at Salvini, noting that the League is under investigation for allegedly taking funding from Russian Federation and commenting on the League leader's recent public appearances and press conferences on Italian beaches.

The League's popularity with Italian voters could pave the way for it to govern in coalition with the smaller, far-right Brothers of Italy party.

"I hope nobody is thinking of taking Italians for a ride, of playing for time and inventing a government that would be democratically unacceptable", he said in Termoli on the Adriatic coast. "Salvini told me that he meant to interrupt this government experience to have elections in order to capitalise on the support the League now enjoys", Conte told journalists in Rome. In recent days, Mattarella has spoken against early elections and defended the need for institutional stability.

Earlier on Thursday, Conte also met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, who has a constitutional right to dissolve the parliament and call early elections.

The developments follow Salvini's demand for the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, to reconvene parliament to collapse the administration.

Tensions within the coalition of Salvini's right-wing League party and the populist M5S have been high recently over an infrastructure project involving a high-speed rail link with France.

In the European election in May this year, however, the League took the most votes in Italy with 34 percent against about 17 percent for M5S.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy's League party, on August 8 withdrew support for the governing coalition with the anti-establishment Five-Star Movement and called for fresh elections.

Salvini said Saturday that pulling the country out of either the euro or the European Union "has never been in the works".

Italy has until late October to draft a new budget law, which must be approved by the end of the year. By filing the no-confidence motion on Friday, Salvini has pre-empted that possibility.

"No palace intrigues, no unusual manoeuvres, this coalition is dead and we must have elections", he told Rai Uno.

This would supposedly be between a new M5S leadership supported by the centre-left Democrat Party of former premier Matteo Renzi plus lawmakers who fear losing their seats in a snap poll.
