Financier Jeffrey Epstein killed himself while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges in NY, officials said Saturday.
Epstein, 66, was a hedge fund manager who hobnobbed with the rich, famous and influential, including presidents and a prince. His friends had once included Britain's Prince Andrew, former President Bill Clinton and President Donald Trump.
Every 15 minutes, guards are also required to make "another check on prisoners who are on suicide watch".
Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) on August 10 called for the House Committee on Oversight and Reform to "begin its investigation" into why Epstein got a lenient plea deal in 2008 when he was sentenced to 13 months and was allowed to work from his Palm Beach office.
Staff tried to revive him, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he lacked authorization to discuss jail operations publicly. He was later pronounced dead from an apparent suicide, the BOP said. The Associated Press has not independently confirmed the information.
A person with knowledge of the investigation said that when the decision was made to remove Mr. Epstein from suicide watch, the jail informed the Justice Department that Mr. Epstein would have a cellmate and that a guard "would look into his cell" every 30 minutes.
Other Epstein theories floating online have been darker, especially after Epstein was found injured on the floor of his cell last month with bruises on his neck.
Federal prosecutors in NY charged Epstein with sex trafficking and conspiracy after investigative reporting by The Miami Herald stirred outrage over the 2008 plea bargain.
Julie K. Brown, the Herald investigative reporter whose reporting led to the case being reopened, said she was surprised at Epstein's death.
A conviction could have put him in prison for 45 years.
Prosecutors said that victims would be escorted to a room with a massage table where they would perform sexual massages on Epstein. They also say additional victims have come forward since the arrest. They argued that the new charges were improper because they covered largely the same ground as the non-prosecution agreement.
Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein but said he "had a falling out with him a long time ago".
Epstein's indictment referenced three unidentified employees who served as his co-conspirators, and sources said several people had cut deals with prosecutors to testify against the multimillionaire financier.
A number of lawmakers have called for congressional investigations or probes into Epstein's death and his previous plea deal. "Disbelief. It's still a little shocking that something like that could have happened given his high-profile status in the Bureau of Prisons", she said Sunday on CNN's "Reliable Sources". Araoz alleged that Epstein raped her in his NY mansion in the early 2000s when she was 15.
"We have to live with the scars of his actions for the rest of our lives, while he will never face the consequences of the crimes he committed the pain and trauma he caused so many people", accuser Jennifer Araoz said in a statement.
