  • All Black Barrett banned for three weeks for red card

New Zealand's Scott Barrett lines up before the autumn worldwide rugby union match between England and New Zealand at Twickenham stadium in south-west London on 10 November 2018.

The 25-year-old will miss the second Bledisloe Cup test against Australia at Eden Park next weekend but is clear to play from September 1, six days before New Zealand take on Tonga in Hamilton in their final warm-up for the World Cup.

"Taking into account mitigating factors including the player's exemplary judicial record, his expressed remorse and the fact the player has pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity, the committee reduced the suspension to three weeks", the governing body said in a statement.

Barrett, a near certainty for New Zealand's squad to defend the World Cup in Japan, will miss a couple of potential provincial fixtures but will return in time for a pre-tournament Test against Tonga in Hamilton on September 7.

The absence of 25-year-old Barrett and the injured Brodie Retallick means New Zealand will field a fourth-choice lock in Saturday's Bledisloe Cup Test.

Meanwhile, England coach Eddie Jones has labelled Barrett's red card as "ridiculous", and called on World Rugby to be consistent after he claimed two Welsh players escaped the red cards penalties following similar offences against England on the weekend.
