Cuccinelli rewrites Statue of Liberty poem to defend immigration stance

A top USA immigration official has revised a quote inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in defence of a new policy that denies food aid to legal migrants.
Lazarus' poem reads: "Give me your exhausted, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore".
"Give me your exhausted and your poor who can stand on their own two feet".
It comes as Trump officials debuted a regulation that denies aid to migrants.
According to the regulations, when the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service decides whether to issue a permanent residence permit (green card), it will consider whether the applicant has received public welfare as a factor in consideration of his or her education, income, and health status.
This regulation will take effect in a few weeks' time, precisely on October 15.
The rule change is meant to reinforce "ideals of self-sufficiency", officials said.
Some critics believe that the new regulations are aimed at low-income immigrant groups.
What did the official say?
During the briefing, Cuccinelli was asked by CBS News Radio correspondent Steven Portnoy if the words on the base of the statue, which have been there since 1903, should "come down".
He said the welcoming words from the 1903 plaque at the Statue of Liberty, "Give me your exhausted, your poor", were put there "at nearly the same time" as when the first public charge law was passed - in 1882.
Director of Citizen and Immigration Services Ken Cuccinelli suggested a little tweak to the famous Emma Lazarus "give me your exhausted, your poor" poem on NPR Morning Edition Tuesday.
He insisted that the poem plaque was placed on the Statue of Liberty at nearly the same time as the first public charge law.
"When it comes to immigration, the Statue of Liberty says, 'Give me your exhausted, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, '" Acosta said.
Kenneth Cuccinelli: "Through the public charge rule, President Trump's administration is reinforcing the ideals of self-sufficiency and personal responsibility, ensuring that immigrants are able to support themselves and become successful here in America".
Asked if that changes the definition of the American Dream, Cuccinelli said, "No one has a right to become an American who isn't born here as an American".
The immigration rules have required immigrants to be self-sufficient or for their sponsors to meet certain income guidelines to show they support them so that they do not become "public charges".
But the new rules will affect those Indians who are not well-off and maybe using public benefits or appear likely to require them.
