Williams earned her first career win against Osaka on Friday at the Rogers Cup quarterfinals.

The match marked the first time the two had played against each other since Williams' defeat in the U.S. Open final, according to the New York Times.

Japan's Naomi Osaka will return to the top of the women's singles world ranking this week, despite losing 6-3, 6-4 to Serena Williams in the Rogers Cup quarter-finals on Friday.

Bouzkova notched her third straight win over a Grand Slam champion, having beaten former US Open victor Sloane Stephens and former French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko.

The Czech Marie Bouzkova, 91st World and qualifying, will be his opponent in Saturday's half: it has benefited from the abandonment after a set of the Romanian, ex-N.1 world, Simona Halep, embarrassed to a tendon d 'Achilles.

The 23-time grand slam champion has since apologised and, in their first meeting since, Williams delivered an impeccable performance at the WTA Premier tournament to score her first career win over Osaka.

Naomi Osaka was offered a dose of reality after her winning start against Serena Williams was ended, but the Japanese claimed defeat meant she "accomplished [her] dream". When asked about this in her post-match interview, Williams, who is 16 years Osaka's senior, quipped that she's "more or less her tennis grandma".

However, Osaka - playing more tentatively in windy conditions - sent a forehand long to give Williams, a three-time victor of the tournament, a break in the eighth game.

"I'm clearly not (yet) where I would like to be but I'm getting close to it", responded Williams, still looking for his 24th Grand Slam, which would be the first since the birth of his daughter in September 2017, and who would allow him to match Margaret Court's record.

"I m getting there", said Williams, who hasn t dropped a set this week as she pursues a fourth Toronto title to go with those she won in 2001, 2011 and 2013. I go into every match thinking I can do it, but sometimes that doesn't happen. "I just went out there and I never gave up because it's not over until it's over". "I don't really like too much change". I know what I need to do to hopefully try to get a win today, and it helped a little bit.

The pair seemed evenly poised in the opening set until Williams broke in the seventh game. "So this is such a big learning experience for me".

Andreescu will face Sofia Kenin after the American upset Ukrainian sixth seed Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
