8, Melissa Martin and Denise Mintz took their dogs to a pond in Wilmington, N.C. - and 15 minutes after leaving, their dog Abby had a seizure, CNNreported.

Their owner posted on Facebook that the dogs "contracted blue-green algae poisoning" after their swim, and that the algae killed the pets within a matter of hours.

Several dog owners from North Carolina, Georgia and Texas have reported their pets dying from algae exposure. "I had no idea", said Melissa Martin, whose dogs died from blue-green algae poisoning.

According to Alberta Health Services, ingestion of blue-green algae may lead to skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Maps of the states where algae blooms reside are periodically updated by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.

The microscopic cyanobacteria occur naturally in ponds, lake, canals and other standing water, and grow and spread quickly, using the sun as their energy source. "It is a good idea to keep pets out of the water when cyanobacteria may be present".

Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz called the violence "horrific" and said a motive for the attack remains unclear. Investigators did not immediately release detailed information on the traffic stop or on the suspected gunman.

It's not possible to determine the presence of toxins in the water without testing, so all blooms should be considered potentially toxic, Pet Poison Helpline said. "It just kind of behooves anybody that sees algae in a lake, in a pond, that they'd probably want to be cautious and just not expose themselves to it or to their pets".

How do I know if my dog has been exposed? Its toxins also are harmful to people, but dogs are particularly vulnerable because they ingest them, per the New York Times. Even dogs that avoid the water may be in danger.

The algae can be hard to fight because it will only be in the lakes for a week or two, sometime even just one day.

Dogs that survive after drinking or swimming in algae-contaminated water can also cause long term health problems.

While city officials couldn't confirm to the news outlet that the dogs' deaths were linked to the algae, the report said they did not dispute the algae may be responsible. Do not forget to wear gloves to protect yourself. Though equally susceptible to toxic effects of these cyanotoxins, humans are less likely to suffer deadly consequences because they generally do not drink large amounts of algae-contaminated water or roll around in it.

"Toxic algae, they can cause neurotoxicity".
