"Si le Grace 1 est libéré, et ce serait probablement le cas si l'Iran s'engageait en coulisses à ne pas exporter ce pétrole vers la Syrie, alors il est probable que le Stena Impero sera lui aussi libéré", avait-elle déclaré à l'AFP avant l'audience de jeudi.

Selon l'analyste, Téhéran soupçonne les Britanniques d'avoir arraisonné le Grace 1 à la demande des États-Unis du président Donald Trump, qu'ils considèrent comme l'instigateur d'une "guerre économique contre l'Iran visant à long terme à empêcher l'Iran de reprendre sa part de marché dans le secteur pétrolier".

Les États-Unis ont demandé jeudi aux autorités de Gibraltar de prolonger l'immobilisation du pétrolier iranien qu'elles retiennent depuis un mois, un coup de théâtre alors que le territoire britannique s'apprêtait à laisser repartir le navire. Le gouvernement de Gibraltar a dit jeudi avoir reçu la promesse écrite de Téhéran de ne pas envoyer en Syrie ces barils, et la Cour suprême de ce petit territoire britannique situé à l'extrême sud de l'Espagne a levé l'immobilisation du Grace 1.

"Notre pétrolier illégalement saisi a été relâché". "Il n'y a pas de comparaison ni de lien entre la saisie ou l'attaque de navires de commerce par l'Iran dans le détroit d'Ormuz et l'application de sanctions europénnes contre la Syrie par le gouvernement de Gibraltar", a déclaré un porte-parole du Foreign office. Alors que la Grande-Bretagne et l'Iran nient avoir prévu d'échanger les navires, on s'attend généralement à ce que le navire battant pavillon britannique ne soit pas libéré tant que le pétrolier iranien ne sera pas libéré.

Plus tôt dans la journée, le ministère américain de la Justice avait demandé à saisir le pétrolier iranien Grace 1.

La volonté américaine de saisir le navire iranien devrait ouvrir un nouveau front. La décision de la Cour suprême de Gibraltar survient alors que le ministère américain de la Justice avait fait la demande de saisir le navire.

La "tentative de piraterie" américaine a échoué, s'est réjoui sur Twitter le ministre iranien des Affaires étrangères Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Entretemps, le capitaine et les trois officiers du Grace 1, qui étaient en liberté sous caution, ont été formellement libérés, a annoncé un porte-parole du gouvernement de Gibraltar.
