Then, as PM, he could table a motion for an early general election which would succeed with the support of two-thirds of the seats in the Commons, in the same fashion as Theresa May's vote in 2017.

"While it is likely that the issue will be contested in the courts, our priority should be to work together in Parliament to prevent a deeply damaging no-deal being imposed on the country, denying voters the final say", he wrote in his letter to the MPs.

British leader Boris Johnson will travel to meet his French and German counterparts on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, in his first foreign engagements since becoming prime minister last month, a Guardian reporter said on Friday.

Johnson says Britain will leave the European Union with or without a deal on October 31 and is refusing to negotiate with Brussels until it agrees to change the Withdrawal Agreement, the deal it negotiated with his predecessor Theresa May.

Parliamentary votes have shown there is a small majority against a no-deal Brexit.

But the leaked paper says it is "currently unforeseeable" that Mr Johnson "will change his tough negotiating position".

However, he has also said that he'd prefer to leave with a deal.

Mr. Corbyn, a low-key Remain campaigner during the 2016 referendum, has been under pressure within his party to step up efforts to prevent it from happening.

I would welcome the chance to discuss these proposals further with you, which I hope can halt the serious threat of no deal, end the uncertainty and disarray, and allow the public to decide the best way ahead for our country.

Leader Anna Soubry said Mr Corbyn "is not the person given he struggles to maintain the confidence of his own backbenchers".

While the political turmoil of the previous year has led to an unprecedented level of cross-party cooperation, many in Johnson's Conservative Party and others would still find it hard to vote for a Corbyn-led administration.
