Foreign Ministry confirms Israeli envoy to Jordan summoned

  • A tale of two cities

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry summoned on Sunday Israel's ambassador to the country for a reprimand over last week's clashes at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa compound when Jewish worshipers were allowed on the site to mark Tisha B'Av, which coincided with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, reports Haaretz.

Sufian Qudah, spokesperson of Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement that the "Israeli transgressions" fuel the tension and represent a violation to the worldwide law.

The site has always been a flashpoint between Jews, who marked the destruction of the First and Second Temple and consider Al-Aqsa the holiest site in Judaism, and Muslims who consider the site the third holiest after Mecca and Medina.

Amman called for an immediate end of "these provocative and absurd violations", which it said were "inflaming the conflict" and were a violation of worldwide law.

Qudah confirmed that during a meeting, the Israeli Ambassador was informed of the Kingdom's strong condemnation of the statements made by the Israeli Public Security Minister regarding the status quo at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif.

Shortly before the statement was issued, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said he met with ambassadors from European Union states to stress the need for worldwide measures to stop "Israel's violations" of holy sites in Jerusalem.

The Foreign Ministry affirmed its condemnation and its refusal to close the gates of the Mosque and prevent the worshipers from entering it or put any restrictions on worshippers' entry under any pretext.

"I think there is in an injustice in the status quo that has existed since '67", he told Israel's Radio 90. "We need to work to change it so in the future Jews, with the help of God, can pray at the Temple Mount".

He clarified that he opposes introducing such a change unilaterally.

"This needs to be achieved by diplomatic agreements and not by force", Erdan said.

Safadi warned against the grave consequences of Israeli unilateral steps meant to change the historical and legal status of Jerusalem, according to a Foreign Ministry statement obtained by Xinhua.
