  • Imran Khan extends Pak army chief's tenure citing security concerns

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has been given an extension in term for another three years by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The extension of Bajwa's tenure is only the second time in almost a decade that an Army chief had their traditional three-year term increased.

"General Qamar Javed Bajwa is appointed Chief of Army Staff for another term of three years from the date of completion of current tenure", read a notification issued by the Prime Minister's Office. "The decision has been taken in view of the regional security environment", said a brief statement issued by the PM office on Monday.

Bajwa has been in the post since November 2016.

Pakistan's powerful army chief has been given a three-year extension, only days after tension with neighbouring India again flashed over disputed Kashmir.

General Bajwa had accompanied Imran Khan on his first visit to the US.

In a country prone to frequent military coups, the army generals who, enforced many years of martial law in Pakistan since independence in 1947, have held power for almost as long as the civilians.

Sources also said while the Pakistan Army continues to have a huge influence over the civilian government, this will become more open and apparent in the coming months.

Unlike other potential candidates, very few had discussed and debated the candidature of Qamar when Nawaz Sharif was consulting his aides to name the next army chief.

He said that according to some global media reports, there were some skirmishes in Occupied Kashmir even on Saturday. The military denies meddling in politics or muzzling the media. He said that the Pakistani military is playing an important role in talks between the Afghan Taliban and the US.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa was commissioned in 16 Baloch Regiment on 24 October 1980. This includes Strategic Command Division DG Lt Gen Sarfaraz Sattar, Chief of General Staff Lt General Nadeem Raza, Karachi Commander Lt General Humayun Aziz and Multan Commander Naeem Ashraf.

The Pakistani military is also believed to be playing a vital role in ongoing peace talks between the USA and Taliban that aim to secure a withdrawal of American troops in exchange for insurgent promises that Afghanistan will not be used as a safe haven for groups such as Al Qaeda or Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). General Bajwa also met all his Corps Commanders on August 6, 2019, where Jammu and Kashmir dominated the proceedings.
