The United States and the Taliban officials resumed talks in Qatar on Thursday to firm up a deal enabling the withdrawal of USA troops from Afghanistan in return for the Taliban security guarantees, the Taliban and senior US official said.

More than 2,400 USA service personnel have died in Afghanistan since the US -led invasion in 2001 to topple the Taliban.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the top United States negotiator on Afghanistan, said officials will "try and close on remaining issues" during peace talks in Qatar.

Zabihullah Mujahed, the group's spokesman, said in an online statement they had killed four USA soldiers and six local security forces in Faryab province bordering Turkmenistan.

The US formally ended its Afghan combat mission in 2014 but still provides extensive air and other support to local forces battling both the Taliban and an affiliate of the Islamic State group.

It comes as US and Taliban negotiators were set to resume talks in Qatar on ending the almost 18-year Afghan war.

Taliban attacks have not slowed down in recent years or months, even as the USA has continued talks with the group.

It has demanded a complete withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and has rejected holding direct talks with the Afghan government.

The NATO-led Resolute Support Mission confirmed late on Wednesday that two US soldiers live their lives in Afghanistan earlier today.
