  • Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg treated for new pancreatic cancerMore

There is no evidence of the disease elsewhere in her body and she does not need any further treatment at the time.

The new tumor on her pancreas was detected after a routine blood test in early July and a biopsy on July 31 confirmed it was malignant. the court said.

If Ginsburg, one of the nine-member court's four liberal justices, were unable to continue serving, Republican President Donald Trump could replace her with a conservative, further shifting the court to the right.

"She cancelled her annual summer visit to Santa Fe, but has otherwise maintained an active schedule", the statement added.

Ginsburg, 86, began radiation therapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City on August 5th, according to the court.

She had out-patient radiation treatment for a malignant tumor on her pancreas. The oldest Supreme Court justice, Ginsburg leads the liberal wing on the court which is now outnumbered 5-4 by conservatives.

The Supreme Court is set to open a new term on the first Monday in October, and the justices routinely return to work in September.

She returned to the bench in February and was an active participant in the remaining oral arguments of the court term, which ended in June.

Despite her recent health scare, Ginsburg has made a series of public appearances and continues to travel. "My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so think I have about at least five more years".

Ginsburg, appointed in 1993 by Democratic President Bill Clinton, broke three ribs in a fall in November.

The liberal justice, who has become a pop culture icon dubbed "the Notorious RBG" and a hero for young activists, dismissed concerns over her health in an interview with NPR in July, saying she is "very much alive".
