The frequency of napping varied. "It's often hard to untangle what is cause and effect, especially when some serious conditions, such as coronary heart disease, can be largely symptom-free for decades prior to a critical complication such as a heart attack", he told the Science Media Centre (SMC) in London.

Researchers at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland have linked napping twice a week to a lower risk of suffering heart attack or stroke.

A new review has found that a daytime nap taken when or two times a week could reduced the hazard of coronary heart assaults or strokes.

While some studies have been done on the impact of napping on heart health, many published studies fail to consider napping frequency or duration, the researchers said.

Hearty naps " The study of napping is a challenging but also a promising field with potentially significant public health implications", the authors explain.

"It could be that that these people who nap once to twice a week are those who make napping a priority, because they know they don't sleep enough during the week", said Céline Vetter, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder who studies circadian rhythms and sleep disruption.

Each participant had a check-up sometime between 2009 and 2012 when the team recorded information on their sleep and nap patterns in the previous week.

All Blacks amass 92 points in final World Cup warm-up game
Ioane's first touch was a kickoff, which was claimed by Bridge, who scored just seven seconds after the restart - most probably a world record.

During interviews, over half (58%) of the participants said they hadn't napped during the previous week; around one in five (19%, 667) said they had taken one to two naps; around one in ten (12%, 411) said they had taken three to five; while a similar proportion (11%, 370) said they had taken six to seven.

Next time you're feeling a bit sluggish, go ahead and hit the sheets for a power nap. Though they reported sleeping longer at night than those who don't nap, they also reported more daytime sleepiness and were more likely to have sleep apnea, a condition that wakes a person repeatedly in the night when their breathing stops.

Over the course of the study there were 155 fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular disease events. This association held true even after controlling for factors such as age, nighttime sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, depression, and regularity of sleep, as well as other cardiovascular disease risks, such as high blood pressure/cholesterol. Only older age (65+) and severe sleep apnoea affected it.

But the 67 per cent heightened cardiovascular risk initially observed for frequent nappers virtually disappeared after taking account of potentially influential factors.

"Many of us might aim to grab an extra 40 winks here and there but more evidence is needed before we can say that regular napping can help to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke".

No association was found for more frequent napping or nap duration, which ranged from a five-minute catnap to more than an hour in length.

"It is tricky to examine analysis as there is now not one of these thing as a gold popular for measuring and defining "naps" making it hard to invent firm conclusions".
