  • Turkey's former PM Davutoglu resigns from ruling AK Party

Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has announced his resignation from Turkey's ruling AK Party and says he will launch a new political movement, in the latest challenge to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from his former allies.

Three other AKP members who were also apparently slated for dismissal accompanied Davutoglu in his Friday resignation.

All "consultation channels" within the in the party are closed, and there was no room left for "well-intentioned criticism and advice" in the party, he stated.

"I resign from the party where I have served with great honour, worked for years and given much effort to", Davutoglu said.

"Our intention and goal is not to disagree, divide and weaken; our aim was to put forward the possibilities of renewing our party within the framework of founding principles as an interpreter for the discomfort seen in our party cadres and grassroots", he stated.

McIlroy meanwhile admitted he had been somewhat surprised to pip PGA Championship victor and world number one Koepka to the award. He said at the start of the year at Kapalua, which he had not previously played, that his emphasis would be in America.

The AKP's central executive committee last week chose to take action to expel Davutoglu, along with former MPs Selçuk Özdağ, Ayhan Sefer Üstün and Abdullah Başcı on the grounds that they acted in contradiction to the AKP's rules of procedure.

"It is our historical responsibility and duty to the nation... to set up a new political movement", Davutoglu told reporters in Ankara.

Ahmet Davutoglu - prime minister for almost two years, in 2014-2016 - was facing a hearing in the Justice and Development (AK) Party likely to result in his dismissal.

In May 2016, Davutoglu stepped down from both posts and was succeeded by Binali Yildirim, Turkey's last prime minster before the position was eliminated in constitutional reforms.

In recent months, Davutoglu has accused the AK Party of deviating from its core principles, hitting out at the government's economic record and Erdogan himself.
