The Indian ban covers the production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sale, distribution, storage of e-cigarettes, as well as advertisements.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman claimed that e-cigarettes are being used more for stylistic reasons than to actually wean people of smoking altogether.

The government said it would advance tobacco control efforts and contribute to a reduction in tobacco usage.

E-cigarettes heat up a liquid - tasting of anything from bourbon to bubble gum or just tobacco, and which usually contains nicotine - into vapour, which is inhaled.

While the customs, drugs and health administrations are against e-cigarettes, the trade ministry said in April this year that it can not impose a ban on e-cigarette imports since local production of it has not been halted yet. It is believed there are more than 400 brands, none of which is manufactured yet in India.

"These novel products come with attractive appearances and multiple flavours and their use has increased exponentially and acquired epidemic proportions in developed countries, especially among youth and children", India's health ministry said.

Considering the ill-effects e-cigarettes on health, the Health Ministry has prepared a draft with strict rules and laws on e-cigarettes called "The Prohibition of E-cigarettes Ordinance 2019" to stop the unexpected growth of e-cigarette market in India which is unregulated so far.

More than 9,00,000 people die each year in the country due to tobacco-related illnesses.

The decision is likely to benefit almost 11,52,000 employees of the Indian Railways.

This is for the sixth consecutive year that productivity linked bonus is being given to Railway employees. This year also, 11,52,000 employees will get 78 days wage as bonus. This is the reward for productivity, " the Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javdekar said.

If the government brings an ordinance, it will have to replace it with a bill in the next session of parliament.

-It will lead to outgo of over Rs 2,024 crore.

Legislation is also being tightened elsewhere, and in Singapore e-cigarettes are already outlawed. This can go up to imprisonment of three years or a fine up to Rs 5 lakhs for subsequent violations.

An unregulated e-cigarette market and easy availability has been blamed by medical practitioners for the rising number of health complications among young Indians.
