Iran has confirmed that three Australian citizens are being held in the Islamic Republic on suspicion of spying amid the ratcheting up of tensions between the Tehran and the West.

Esmaili said two Australians were being held over the use of a drone to take pictures and video inside military areas and other unauthorized areas.

The third person was arrested for spying for a third country, the spokesman added.

"Criminal charges have been issued for both cases and they are waiting for their trial", he said.

Jolie King and Mark Firkin have been identified as the travelling Australian couple detained in Iran, while Kylie Moore-Gilbert has been identified as the third Australian.

He did not give their names and it wasn't clear when they had been charged.

Attack on Saudi Arabia included projectiles fired from Iranian territory, sources say
Last week, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammed Faisal said all parties must work towards easing the tension in the region. At least 11 supertankers were waiting to load oil cargoes from Saudi ports, ship tracking data showed on Monday.

The details are contained in a brief report from the semi-official Fars news agency, which contains the first information from within Iran about the detention of three Australians.

Gulf News quoted Iranian judiciary spokesperson Gulam Hussain Esmaili stating that the court will decide if they were guilty or not.

Australian officials have said talks are under way to secure the release of the three Australians jailed in Iran. Foreign Minister Marise Payne said there was "no reason" to believe the arrests were politically motivated.

Moore-Gilbert was working as a lecturer specializing in Middle East politics for Melbourne University's Asia Institute before her arrest.

Their indictments come after Tehran's top diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif in April raised the case of Negar Ghodskani, an Iranian woman arrested by Australia in 2017.
