Well, President Trump huffed and puffed and now, finally, he's getting on with his efforts to blow California's house down. Industry watchers feared that the Trump administration's plan to freeze federal emission standards, a rollback of tightened standards created by the Obama administration, could have led to two auto markets in the U.S., one subject to more restrictive California regulations and another linked to significantly less stringent federal standards.
Conservative and free-market groups have been invited to attend an announcement of the rollback Wednesday afternoon at the Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington.
"So we will be moving forward with one national standard very soon". On the other side, some might argue that having separate MPG standards for different states effectively empowers automakers to set the bar for emissions and fuel economy by striking separate deals to best suit their interests. The final requirements may be closer to the Obama-era regulations in place now. As it stands, automakers must have a portfolio that returns 46.7 miles per gallon by 2026.
"California will continue its advance toward a cleaner future".

Some senior administration officials believe provoking a court battle with California gives them a historic chance to displace the state from vehicle emissions oversight and could give the Supreme Court the chance to revisit a landmark 5-4 2007 decision that found the EPA has the legal authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles.
California's special right to set its own tailpipe pollution rules dates to the 1970 Clean Air Act, the landmark federal legislation created to fight air pollution nationwide. But a major factor for automakers was California's likely unwillingness to go along with the changes.
The state has long pushed automakers to adopt more fuel-efficient passenger vehicles that emit less pollution.
"I'm not out there to try to increase pollution into the air", Delrahim said at a Senate hearing. It has also convinced BMW, Ford, Honda, and Volkswagen to stick to the now-repealed Obama-era regulations on fuel efficiency that were weakened by President Donald Trump.
