Michelle Carter, the woman convicted of convincing her boyfriend through text messages to commit suicide, has been denied early release by the Massachusetts Parole Board.

One day after Carter's hearing, the board returned its decision, writing, "The [Board] is troubled that Ms. Carter not only encouraged Mr. Conrad to take his own life, she actively prevented others from intervening in his suicide". The board says Carter "needs to further address" the factors that led to her actions.

Carter was convicted in Roy's death back in June 2017, but her sentence was pushed back to this year while she pursued an appeal.

Michelle Carter, 22, began her 15-month sentence in February after the Massachusetts Supreme Court agreed with the lower court's guilty verdict.

Carter and Roy met in 2012 while vacationing in Florida. She appeared before a parole board behind closed doors this week to request an early release.

Carter's defense team has appealed her conviction to the US Supreme Court, which has yet to decide whether it will hear the case. "She has earned good time from working and attending programs, and now March 13, 2020, is when her sentence ends".

The pair had been dating for two years, though had only met five times over the course of their relationship. "You can't think about it". Both struggled with depression, and Roy had previously tried to kill himself. In addition to her statement that she told Roy to "get back in" as he expressed a desire to abort his fatal plan, Carter initially failed to tell anyone else about it, the judge noted. Roy was found dead at age 18 after he let his truck fill with carbon monoxide in a parking lot.

In hundreds of texts and statements that came to light after Roy's suicide, Carter, who was 17 when Roy died, was revealed to have pushed him to go through with the act.

'His death is my fault like honestly I could have stopped him, ' she said in a message to a friend. "I could have stopped him but I told him to get back in the vehicle".

Carter's attorneys have argued her texts were constitutionally protected free speech. That sentence was put on hold until the Supreme Judicial Court upheld her conviction, and she began serving the sentence February 11.

Cataldo, Carter's attorney, said Friday, "It is never in society's best interest to incarcerate anyone for the content of their speech where there was not a specific statute criminalizing such speech at the time it was made".
