  • Ulster Bank parent RBS appoints Alison Rose as new chief executive

State-rescued Royal Bank of Scotland on Friday promoted Alison Rose to the post of chief executive, making her the first female boss of a major United Kingdom lender.

RBS ended months of speculation when it confirmed Rose, the favourite for the job, will take over from Ross McEwan on 1 November. He is set to join National Australia Bank as CEO after leaving RBS.

Ms Rose was understood to have been informally selected by the lender's board over a month ago but the bank has been waiting for regulators to sign off on the decision.

Rose, who has worked at RBS for 25 years, is now deputy chief executive of Natwest and heads the group's commercial and private banking division.

It also made the bank the only FTSE 100 firm to have women in its two top executive roles, joining chief financial officer Katie Murray who joined RBS a year ago.

Ms Rose said she was "looking forward to getting started" in her new job, adding: "Maintaining the safety and soundness of this bank will continue to underpin everything we do".

Rose will be the first woman to run RBS and the first female chief executive of one of Britain's big four banks - RBS, HSBC, Barclays and Lloyds.

Gassnola testified that neither Jayhawks coach Bill Self nor his assistants had knowledge of the so-called pay-to-play scheme. However, he played extensively in the previous season, including every postseason game en route to a Final Four berth.

"Under Ross' leadership, RBS has undergone a significant transformation and, as part of his leadership team, I am extremely proud of all we have accomplished, and I would like to thank him for the support he has given me over the last six years". She will be paid a salary of £1.1m plus £1.1m in shares and £26,250 in other benefits, taking her basic pay to more than £2.2m a year.

Rose will also have to try to steer the bank back into private ownership. She will have to steer RBS through choppy economic waters, especially if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union without a deal.

"Our industry is facing a series of challenges; from the ongoing economic and political uncertainty to shifts in the behaviour and expectations of our customers, driven by rapid advances in technology", Rose said in a press release.

'It will be my priority to make sure we are ready to meet these challenges and build the best bank for families, businesses and communities'.

The UK government is the majority owner of RBS, with a stake of 62%, as it bailed out the bank at a cost of £45.5 billion ($US56.8 billion) during the financial crisis.

'We will be driven with real objective in our work to help achieve the goals and potential of our customers and be there for them at key moments in their lives'.
