  • Arts and Sciences official Academy screening of ‘The Irishman’ at the MoMA Titus Theatre 2

De Niro was speaking to the Guardian ahead of the London film festival premiere of The Irishman, Martin Scorsese's new film, in which he plays mafia killer Frank Sheeran, now generally presumed to have been responsible for the murder of celebrated union boss Jimmy Hoffa in 1975. It's wonderful to me that's he's...getting away with it. "He won't get away with it forever, but he is getting away with saying these things about every institution", De Niro told the BFI audience.

Pressing on the need to protect the institutions plus "the Fourth Estate, the press", the Oscar victor added, "he's trying to destroy them and for only one reason: to save himself".

But the outspoken critic of the USA head of state became animated when given the opportunity to talk politics.

The Oscar-winner used a Q&A segment of the event to skewer Trump again, saying "It's pretty disgusting that we've got Republicans there who are just so afraid to do anything, so afraid to stand up". They are. They could go into private practice, make more money and stand-up and still be very vocal against him and I don't know why they don't do that. "Certain senators have pulled out...but others could pull out, get out and say, 'I can't be in this administration".

One (0.3 meter) to 2 feet (0.6 meters) of snow was expected to accumulate with winds gusting up to 65 miles per hour (105 kph). The Trans-Canada Highway between Winnipeg and Brandon was closed Friday morning as visibility and road condition worsened.

Interviewers can't get enough of asking De Niro about Trump, because it has already been reported that the actor called him a "weird, twisted president who thinks he's a gangster, who's not even a very good gangster" during his appearance on Friday October 11's episode of The Graham Norton Show.

"Gangsters have honour, you shake a hand and they have your word and you have theirs and that's it", he continued. "But with this guy, it's not the case".

The 63rd BFI London Film Festival closes on October 13 with "The Irishman".

His upcoming release "The Irishman" is set to open on streaming service Netflix on November 27 and will be released in select United Kingdom cinemas on November 8.
