  • Scott Cam's new gig trashed

Scott Cam will inspire the next generation of tradespeople in his new role as Australia's first National Careers Ambassador, helping young Australians take advantage of surging demand for skilled workers.

The Gold Logie winner's role will be to highlight how practical and technical training can lead to high-paying and fulfilling jobs.

But the government is refusing to reveal how much taxpayer cash is being pumped into Cam's pocket, claiming his salary is "commercial in confidence".

"Today's announcement by the Prime Minister and the Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Michaelia Cash, reinforces the change in approach now being taken by the Government to ensure vocational education and the careers on offer are seen by young people, their parents and educators, as the pathway to an inspiring and long term career", she said.

The government is also in the middle of a "major modernisation" of the vocational education and training sector, with a $585 million skills package now underway, including increased incentives for up to 80,000 new apprentices and expanded apprentice wage subsidy trials in rural and regional areas and 10 new Industry Training Hubs in areas of high youth unemployment to better connect schools with local employers, industries and training providers.

The TV tradie says there's more career information available now than ever.

He's aiming to point people in the right direction through the "one-stop shop" at the National Careers Institute.

"I'm passionate about apprenticeships, trade life and trade work", Cam said.

"Scott Cam is proof that undertaking a trade can be a very valuable, rewarding and successful career choice, and there are plenty more who can tell a similar story to Scott", said Morrison.

'I want to see more Australians become plumbers, electricians and bakers than lawyers and consultants. "I would like to see more of them going on to become their own boss".

"Should they choose to go down this path, good for them, fantastic news - it's good for the Australian economy", Mr Morrison told reporters.

Labor's education and training spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek is not rapt with the high profile hire.

'Under the Liberals there's a national shortage of tradies, cuts to TAFE and training, and apprentice numbers have fallen off a cliff - Scott Morrison hiring a celebrity is not going to fix any of that'.
