  • Could Egypt and Ethiopia go to war over the Nile?

Ethiopian Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize victor Abiy Ahmed has declared that his country will proceed with its plans to build the dam, stating, "no force can stop Ethiopia" from building it on the River Nile despite objections from Egypt.

In a statement, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said "it was not appropriate" for Ahmed to involve the military option among other choices to solve the dispute with Egypt on Ethiopia's building of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile river, Xinhua news agency reported.

Sudan will likely attend the US meeting, given its aspiration to persuade the United States to remove it from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

While seeking to prolong the deadlock, Ethiopia has rejected bringing in a mediator. The dam, under construction on the Blue Nile tributary in northern Ethiopia, will create Africa's largest hydroelectric power station.

After years of three-way talks with Ethiopia and Sudan, it says it has exhausted efforts to reach a pact on conditions for operating the dam and filling the reservoir behind.

"We believe the dam will benefit all, including Egypt", Abiy told lawmakers in the capital, Addis Ababa. "Egypt, in full transparency and good faith over many years, has always called for, and was keen on, negotiations as a means to resolve the differences pertaining to the GERD between the three countries". "Ethiopians do not want conflict in connection with elections", Abiy said.

"But ultimately there's very little chance the disagreement will result in conflict and, as Abiy said, cooperation is the best solution for all parties".

"The grumpy autocrat from Asmara, who ruthlessly keeps his own people in chains so he can remain in power, is unlikely to enjoy being snubbed under the eyes of the world by a charismatic politician half his age", he added, speaking about Abiy, who recently started threatening of mobilizing millions for war, just days after getting the prize for PEACEMAKING!

But Egypt is concerned the huge dam would severely reduce the flow of Nile waters and invokes its "historic rights" under decades-old treaties. It is expected to become fully operational by 2022.

It serves as a crucial artery for water supplies and electricity for the 10 countries it runs through.

Both leaders are attending a Russia-Africa summit in Sochi which kicked off Wednesday.

"If Sisi and Abiy can achieve a reset it would increase the chances that the engineers, lawyers and diplomats can hammer out a deal".
