Viral wedding photo captures joy, sorrow amid California wildfires

The photo is startling.

The image of Katie and Curtis Ferland shows them standing outside their Chateau St Jean winery wedding in Sonoma county, not far from the wildfire that has burned more than 75,000 acres and destroyed 123 structures.

She explained to that this was the "new normal" for California's wine country.

They were shocked when the photo went viral on social media.

Chaos ensued. Wedding guests were evacuated from the Airbnb rooms they'd rented and the couple thought they would have to cancel their long-anticipated celebration.

But the show went on as Katie Wednesday Curtis.

While talking to an worldwide media outlet, the wedding photographer, Karna Roa, said that the couple had been planning their wedding for the past one year and most of their guests had traveled from out of state for the ceremony.

In the photograph, the bride and groom are dressed in their wedding attire and wearing gas masks to help them withstand the smoke.

'As the couple stood in the vineyard with masks I wondered if this was the "new normal" for the California Wine Country in 2019'.

'When the couple put on the masks and it came time for this photo, I immediately thought of the American Gothic painting from 1930 and how that painting represented the normal for America of the time period. "I would love to say this is the first time it has happened, but this is the third year in a row in October that wine country has experienced this".

Roa lost power for several days because of the wildfire and wasn't able to download the photos for several days. This is the first time I've created an image like this'. A photo of the newlyweds with masks over their faces as fires raged a couple miles away has since been widely shared on Facebook.

"Even though there was a lot of tragedy going on, this still was the happiest day of their lives and it was important to focus on them and their relationship and how they were doing that day", she said. "And now they've got a handsome story".
