Striking Chicago teachers: We'll return if classes made up

  • Members of the Chicago Teachers Union's governing body arrive at the union's Near West Side headquarters to vote whether or not to suspend the longest Chicago Public Schools teachers strike

Sharkey said he and city officials - including Lightfoot - have found some common ground. She has maintained throughout the strike that she won't extend the school year. She also said there isn't a way to do it without further disrupting families' lives.

African-Americans and Hispanics account for the majority of Chicago's public school enrollment.

Sharkey said teachers consider a refusal to make up school days "punitive" and argued that it would ultimately hurt students, including those who must take standardized tests and college admission tests this year.

"Tonight, the Chicago Teachers Union's House of Delegates voted to approve a tentative agreement with the Chicago public schools", stated Sharkey.

The union encouraged its members to fill the streets outside City Hall Thursday, hoping to pressure Lightfoot into accepting its terms.

Classes had been canceled during the strike, but school buildings had remained open and meals had been served.

Lightfoot says she won't accept the union's demand.

The Chicago teachers strike ended Thursday after 11 days with a tentative agreement between the teachers union and the city, leaders announced.

"The CTU may have reached a monumental agreement", union Vice President Stacy Davis Gates said earlier on Twitter, referring to the tentative deal.

Teachers say they are satisfied with mayor's decision to allow five days to make up for time lost to the strike. "What prompted the thinking that was that Mayor Lightfoot mentioned the Simeon football team in her press conference and was upset about that they weren't going to be able to compete".

The contract includes a total salary raise of 16 percent over five years, provisions to hire hundreds of nurses and new limits on class sizes.

It was an early test of first-term Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who campaigned on improving the city's schools but said the school district could not afford the sharp increases in spending on counselors and nurses that teachers sought.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the teachers union's demand to make up two weeks of lost class time due to their strike is a "nonstarter".

A message left with her office was not immediately returned on Wednesday.

Eric Ruder, a CTU spokesman, confirmed that delegates are meeting Wednesday night.

The strike began October 17, after months of negotiations between City Hall and two unions fell through.

Deadlines that could affect Chicago students and their striking teachers are looming over contract talks to resolve a walkout that has canceled classes for ten days in the city.

The agreement will put some 300,000 students back in school Friday. But no progress had been announced by mid-afternoon.

The announcement came just in time for 19 schools whose teams qualified for the state playoffs because IHSA rules require teams from schools where teachers are on strike to practice for three days before they play a game.

The Illinois State High School Association said in a news release that the school district agreed to let the teams practice during the strike. The district did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how numerous schools had found coaches.

Forbes Media Chairman Steve Forbes, former investment banker Carol Roth, River Twice Capital president Zachary Karabell, CIO of Kingsview Asset Management Scott Martin and FOX Business' David Asman discuss the latest headlines surrounding the Chicago teachers' strike. The protest was timed to coincide with Mayor Lori Lightfoot's first budget address.

"Teachers can call it preparation time, but you can call it collaboration time, you can call it time that we need to call parents, the time that we need to grade lessons, to give individual attention to students' work".
