A medical source said around 30 people were wounded Sunday in Khallani. According to Al Jazeera, the security forces have been deliberately attacking the medics who are trying to provide medical aid to the injured protesters.

The clashes wounded scores more people and put security forces back in control of all except one major bridge linking the Iraqi capital's eastern residential and business districts to government headquarters across the Tigris river. The two sources stated in condition of secrecy.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, say three protesters were shot dead while the fourth was killed by a tear gas canister that hit him in the head.

Abdul Mahdi promised electoral reform and said authorities would ban possession of weapons by non-state armed groups who have been accused of killing protesters, and that there would be investigations into demonstrator deaths.

Security forces also fired tear gas at demonstrators in Baghdad injuring more than 20 people, a day after they pushed protests back toward one main square in the Iraqi capital.

Middle East scholars have called the unrest the largest grassroots movement in Iraq's modern history, but human rights advocates continued to raise concern over how security forces have resorted to violent tactics. "This bloodbath must stop now, and those responsible for it must be brought to justice", said Heba Morayef, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Director. As immediate measures, it called for the release of all peaceful demonstrators detained since October 1, initiating a full investigation of cases of abduction and prosecuting and punishing those responsible for the excessive use of force.

It proposed a raft of measures to be undertaken over the next weeks and months, including implementing electoral and constitutional reforms, prosecuting those involved in corruption and enacting laws to prevent graft.
