Doug Schoen, a Democratic strategist and Fox News contributor, touted former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a "substantive" candidate for the Democratic nomination in 2020.

"The (Democratic) party in this primary process has been pulled toward ... the more progressive wing, to the Elizabeth Warrens, to the Bernie Sanders people, who they identify as populists more than Democrats", she said.

Analysts said that Mr Bloomberg would be a threat to Barack Obamas former vice-president Joe Biden, a middle of the road candidate who has struggled to raise cash to fund his candidacy.

Super Tuesday is set to take place on March 3, 2020 and includes: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Democrats Abroad, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

Presented with Mr Bloomberg as a hypothetical entrant into the primary, 32 per cent of Democratic primary voters said they would never vote for him and 6 per cent of Democratic primary voters said they would definitely support him. "But I am clear-eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field", he said at the time. "And there's a fear of that among Democratic donors who are more establishment - that they won't be able to be enthusiastic about that candidate".

If he does get on the ballot in Alabama, Bloomberg will have to register in other states that have later filing deadlines. He's not going to do well, but I think he's going to hurt [Joe] Biden, actually.

At age 77 he would be the second oldest candidate among the Democratic contenders, behind Sanders, who is 78.

"More billionaires seeking more political power surely isn't the change America needs", said Sanders' campaign manager, Faiz Shakir. Instead, a viable Bloomberg campaign will depend upon Iowa and New Hampshire and SC splitting, giving the party no clear front-runner ahead of Super Tuesday. "Or should I spend the next two years doubling down on the work that I am already leading and funding, and that I know can produce real and beneficial results for the country, right now", he wrote in an opinion piece.

Bloomberg is far from an ideological warrior, a pragmatic former New York City mayor who formally joined the Democratic Party only in October of 2018.

Bloomberg, whose net worth is reported to be $52 billion, has stressed climate change and gun control as key concerns. On the Republican side, Trump is 73.

In fact, Trump already has a nickname for the billionaire.

"With regard to Michael Bloomberg, I welcome him in the race", Biden said.
